In these cases you need to use a VPN

Although you can use a VPN to get the best protection every time you connect to the Internet, sometimes a VPN is important. At this point, your data is at greater risk, or you can't access censored or restricted content in other ways.

1.Securely browse public WiFi

VPN matters most when you're connected to a public WiFi hotspot. Public WiFi has some vulnerabilities that can be exploited by hackers, and there is a risk of connecting to public WiFi without using a VPN. There may be the following attacks:

  • Middleman attack -- a hacker intercepts the traffic between your device and your router, which users usually don't notice.

  • Malicious Hotspot - Hackers mimic legitimate public WiFi and set up a hotspot to capture your network traffic.

  • Malicious software - When you connect to an unsecured WiFi, hackers send a malicious program to your device.

  • WiFi sniffing - An attacker detects network traffic at a hotspot in order to analyze your data and try to steal passwords or private information.

Having access to a public WiFi without using a VPN also means that hotspot providers can sell your browsing metadata (which includes the domains you visited, when you visited them, and when you visited them) to advertising and analytics companies.

WiFi hackers and "evil twin" hotspots can also monitor what you're doing on the site if it's not using HTTPS. HTTPS protects the connection between browsers and websites, so its widespread adoption over the past few years has meant that the risk of using public WiFi hotspots has been reduced.

2.Access blocked video streams and other content

One of the most common reasons to use a VPN is to access video streaming services or other content that is not available elsewhere. Using VPN servers in different countries, you can browse the Internet and access restricted content just as you would in your home country.

For more information about streaming with AMANVPN, you can check out our transport guide.

3.Remove content blocked from censorship

VPNS can help you access websites in countries that restrict or censor the Internet. VPNS can help you access sites that are blocked. The use of VPNS can also help you bypass local censorship, such as blocked sites in your employer's or university's network.

When using a VPN, your traffic is encrypted so that your Internet provider can't see the domain you're visiting. VPNS cannot be blocked from accessing restricted content, so VPNS are key to accessing restricted content. When ProtonMail was temporarily shut down in Turkey in 2018, for example, AMANVPN gave users a way to bypass government censorship of web sites.
